first time poster, long time reader... and i'm curious to know

do search engines give a higher ranking to dynamic menu's with text
as opposed to dynamic menu's using images with alt= tag text? or
does it not really matter except for old browser compatibilities sake?

dynamic menus such as javascript drop down menus are not sipderable .. so you should try to avoid them

Or add the links into another place

I agree with the rest of the group on text links.

Another thing to consider. The titles of links are often, or can be, the most descriptive keywords for the page they refer a visitor to. Instead of trying to find a place to work the keyword into the text, you have a perfect place to have it alone (more prominent - sigh... may have to learn to spell again) and as a bonus, it helps the page it is linked to, even before the spider sees it.

if you really want to use drop down menus for any reason you may have, search for css drop down menus which has the same appearence, are easy customizable, giving your visitors an nice impresion on your site and they are spiderable :)

Search engines cannot spider most of the dynamic menus (jscript). Consider creating a good site-map page or placing text links on a page.
