I had read about an article saying that linking with link farms is terrible and not helping, don't every link with link farms. Why do they say so?

A link farm is a mean to manipulate PR. Against Google guidelines.
If you link to a link farm, you are giving them a vote... hummm

Is that meaning "it won't help at all in my PR ranking" ? or it just saying that "I would be contributing more than I would get from them, so not worth at all" ?

which one is more appropriate?

both. Also you weaken the potency of links on your page by adding more. Why add links that diminish the value of the good links (like the ones to your home page)

It means that when--not if--Google catches up with the link, they will slice, dice, and serve in a salad your ass.
huh? what happen to my homepage? Please give advise pls.
If you have a page on your site, one of the links is to your home page, you get internal linking points for it.

If you have a ton of links on that page, the link popularity is split between them.

If you have tons of useless links on the page, the link to your home page hold less weight.

if you have 100 links on the home page and they all 100 are again linked back to home page i think there will not be loss of PR
