Linking with sites from the same "theme"

I keep reading that links from sites of the same theme as mine will carry more weight when it comes to KW rankings. If I have a site selling dog and cat beds (active-pet-beds.com) and I exchange links with general pet supplies sites selling hundreds of pet supplies, are those links considered being in my theme or is that a stretch?

Linda, those are exactly the kind of links you want to get. Theme is most likely much looser than you think. Anything that has to do with pets will be a great link for your site.

Thanks chachi. That makes it easier for me, there are hundreds of pet supplies sites but very few just pet beds sites.
