A question of Theme

Hello.
I have a genealogy / family history / ancestry web site.
I still don't understand just how Google determines if a site is a similar theme.

For example, would a history web site be on the same theme as my site.

Let's say the site is about military history or the history of a region / country.

It is history. Genealogy is family history, but would Google realize this?
I do have the words, "family history" on my web pages.

try a "~genealogy" search on google ( without quotes ) and see what you get
google has a good synonyms dictionary and it can recognize synonyms

a themed back link would have to respect the following:
title having the term you want to rank high for ( or synonym )
url having the term you want to rank high for ( if possible )
content having the term you want to rank high for

and of course the anchor text of the link poiting to your site
