Hello Webmasters,

Just a heads up that the new version of Norton Internet Security that ships with all dell computers has a feature that is designed to block banner advertising. Unfortuantely - part of the algorhithm to determine if an image is a banner ad involves looking at the name.

I have designed over a hundred websites over the last few years and almost all of the use "banner.jpg" (my arbitrary name) for the banner graphic. People started complaining that they couldn't see part of my pages, and upon further investigation I discovered this feature that comes pre-installed and configured on new Dells.

I would recommend avoiding the word "banner" as the name or part of the name of graphic elements on your websites.

Hi,

I had a check and found some more on this at webmaster world. You may need to register though, or sometimes if you search for the url in google and follow the link you can get in.

Cheers,

Wow! It's much worse than I thought. I will have to check my site over thoroughly.

I know I built a web directory once with all the image ads in a folder named "ads". Looks like some users get a lot of red x s on my account.

Thanks Paz.

There's a thread in here somewhere where I talk about PhpAdsNew and the methods they use to defeat Norton's ad blocking.

It's a relatively simple retrofit for a single site, renaming some files, changing file sizes to non-IAB-standard sizes. However, if someone decides to not trust your content and puts the filters for your site on "high", you'll need more serious coding solutions (that I can't help with).
