Hi.
I'm going to be targeting a new keyword for my home page.
The keyword is "family history".
It's a competitive keyword and I really could use some help with getting a lot more text links that use this keyword as the link.
I'm not concerned with PR. Just need lots of links for this keyword.
Open to all link exchanges, PM me if interested.
Thanks.

Instead of PM its a better idea for people to post their exchanges in open so others can see them as well and might not realize they were exchanging links.
Mel, what kind of sites are you looking to exchange links with? I realize that your site is VERY targeted so its hard to be very relevant, do you have any suggestions as to the "type" of sites you are looking to link with. Please dont just take a link from anyone as non relevant links are really worthless. Perhaps you could write an article to put on others sites about family history and use that as a method of link exchange that way the contextualization of the link consideration is high.
You can do this here as well, if you want more instructions no problem just let me know

I am looking to exchange with web sites that are about the following:
genealogy, family sites, history (world or local), DNA sites, genealogy software,
genealogy books, cemetery related, obituaries, ethnic related items (like Irish Jewelry),
Travel (genealogy tours to visit homeland), heraldry sites (crests, coat of arms), old photograph sites, biography sites, historical societies, libraries.
I've only had one link exchange in response to this thread. So, if anyone knows of anyone who has a relevant site that wants a link exchange PLEASE let me know.
It's been very difficult getting relevant links.
My site moves around 140 in the SERPS for family history. At this point, I think it's almost impossible that I'll see the top 20 for this keyword.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Melanie

Would family holiday traditions be something you would consider to be related? I could put a link to you on http://www.christmas-corner.com/christmas-traditions.cfm#personal-traditions if you think that would help.

Hi Donna.
Yes, I think that web page could be considered related. You mention family traditions and your title for the page is "History of Christmas Traditions..".
I'd be happy to exchange links with you. Thank you for the offer.
I placed your link on my tools.html page.

Thanks Donna,
interesting how sometimes we have to think outside the box for partners that are still relevant. Melanue I feel for you as it must be tough finding 100% relevant partners that also appreciate the value of a good link. It just doesnt seem like your vertal is to SE savvy.
What about trying things like "family counseling" or different types of history sites like "war history" etc just suggestions but relevance can follow many lines
Like if you are a real estate agent in phoenix you can exchange links with all sites relevant to real estate, but also all sites relevant to phoenix you dont have to have both so that helps. Try picking apart your phrases a little more and see what you come up with.
Good luck

Seo Guy,
Hi. Another problem is that alot of the personal genealogy sites haven't been worked on in a long time. Their email addresses aren't current and the last worked on dates are from years ago.
I send out about 50 link exchange requests a week. I usually get a lot of email returned because their email address is no longer valid.
And, the others I never hear back from.
I created a cemetery page hoping that giving away valuable information would help get me some links. It's not working. I got about 2 links. I wrote to what I consider the "major sites" in that field and told them I put their links on my cemetery site and would appreciate a link back. I didn't hear from one of them. I did keep one or two of the links up because visitors would be interested in them. But, the others I took down after a month.
I even scanned and put online an old yearbook, just to get two links from the county genealogy web page. That's a lot of work just for the two links. But, I'm going to see if any of that traffic goes to my genealogy business pages. If so, that might be the way to go. So, far only two followed click over to the site ... and i think it was me :)
I thought about writing an article. But, I'm not a very good conversational writer. Just see my site. :)
Sorry, I don't mean to whine. :o It just gets frustrating sometimes.

Family history is often all tied up with the family home. Lots of real estate people around this site selling family homes. Perhaps if you dreamed up an article that tied family history to family homes, or into which agents could insert an example of a historical home and family from their area? If you could work out something that was a bit like a template article that local interest could be added to, there could be a huge potential for links.
Just trying to think ouside the box, but at this hour, I think I might do better to think my way to bed!

Hi LaryL.
I don't think I'd be able to write a generic piece on a historic family home. They all have their own stories to tell. And, actually there are other professionals that research house histories. I research the history of people, sometimes this includes researching deeds. But, it would require a lot of research to write up an article on a specific house.
Thanks for trying to help.

Hump. I got more links for that keyword and now my site just dropped out of the top 200.
Perhaps, I got hit with the sandbox effect? But, I've only gotten a few new links.

Cetainly an accurate specific history would take a lot of research., But you've just written the bones of a house/real estate/family history article right there. Do a couple of articles: One about the fact that there are professionals who research house histories, or an overview of how to do that. The home/house history is part of the family history - you've now linked real estate to family history for links. I own a home that was built by Civil War draft dodgers and would read about how I could learn more about my home's history.
Second article about how it feels to sell the family home and how to preserve/maintain memories after the home is sold, etc., etc. Again easy to tie into real estate link exchange.
Much easier to write about family history and houses in an info article than to write a specific history.
Hope this gives you some ideas. I really should go and look at your site before spouting off.

Not a very nice present from Google. Did you tell them it was your birthday? :p
If it makes you feel better, I recently did something simmilar, was bumped up to the 200 range for a couples day, vanished for three days after that, and today showed up at #31 (the highest this page has ever been since it started 4 months ago) for a somewhat competitive term.
So, it may be the start of a big jump up.
Of course it could have just been the end of a big jump (down) but I suspect you are a "glass half full" girl. ;)
Happy Birthday!

If you're trying to move up the serps you should consider DigitalPoints Coop Advertising Network. http://www.reversi.se/adnetwork.php
Joined the network 4 days ago and climbed from that pesky 2nd page to #5
The good thing is you only have to display a single text link on your end :p

On the theory that an encyclopedia is relevant to _everything_, I wonder if you'd be interested in exchanging links with the new *OmniKnow* site, which is just that, an online encyclopedia.
At present, it is listed with PR 0 (despite several at-least-medium-PR pages pointed at it) and 1 page (though in fact G has already indexed tthe entire topmost layer, 61 pages), but--it has well over a half million pages, and a growing number of backlinks.
If you'd like to exchange links, and go on the "Honor Roll" page, well, if it does eventually take off, we'll remember who was there in the beginning.
(And everyone is invited--this thing is literally "omni-relevant".)
The site is, incidentally, a marrying-up of the Wikipedia open-source encyclopedia and the dmoz open-source Open Directory: pages get a topic discussion from Wikipedia and a relevant links list from dmoz, which is, I think (and others have concurred) a true value-added creation.
OmniKnow = http://omniknow.com/
(I don't know what's going on, but I am unable to compose a post in which the various elements--bold, url, indent--do anything but show as plain text, so I have removed them from this post. I have tried several times, including as new threads, and still the same thing.)

Hi Eric.
That's an interesting genealogy section that you have there.
Sure, I will exchange links with you.
Would you mind if I linked directly to the genealogy section instead of the homepage?

Any chance of getting a listing in the External Links section of any of the genealogy related pages? I do have a link in the Relevant Sites: Genealogy section, but I'm number 729.
Thank you.

Hi Robert.
Well, unfortunately it didn't bounce back up. Yet :)
So, I'm working on changing the signature.
It reminds me of the saying about having your cake and eating it too.
Jontelofot,
Thanks. I'll look into that Digital Point Ad Network again.

Not a problem. We'll take what we can get. I have placed a link on the "Honor Roll" page that you should check to make sure it is agreeable to you. PM me if you need a change.

You must understand that I am only reproducing what is in the Wikipedia encyclopedia. But--and this is the wonder and delight of Wikipedia--you can freely edit their article in real time, and add your link. Start from http://en.wikipedia.org/ and go to whatever articles to which you feel you can constructively add something, even if but a good link.
It is wise to read their discussion of how to edit, and of course commonsense restrictions apply: for Wikipedia to remain the wonderful resource it is, those providing edits need to exercise a severe self-restraint. It is not an "open" advertising medium, it is, like so much open-source material, a resource that relies on the integrity of its contributors.
P.S.: Y'know, Morgan, the more I look at this, the more I think you are right that you should restore normal editing to posts here.
