Am new to seo, and have many questions about getting my new site going.
Re. "comments" meta tags:
1. Do they add any strength to the page?
2. Some sites that I've seen use other companies' trade names in their meta tags. Is that ethical and/or legal?

1 - I really don't think that it would have that big an effect to your actual SERP's. I might be wrong but I never use tham and seem to do pretty well. I guess it couldn't do you any harm to use tham but it's your call.
2 - Not too sure about that one. If I were you, I'd check the TM and Copyright laws for whatever country you are in.

Commenting used to be a way to stuff keywords in the past, so the SE's are looking for repetitive words in the comment tags, so the best advice is to use them to mark your code.
If you are going to trademark your name, wouldn't it make sense to have it so that not only the SE's see it, but also your visitors?
