Here is some background info:
The site is basically split into two parts:
1) The website (coded and design by myself)
2) The shop (Actinic Catalog (http://www.actinic.co.uk/) with a few html/javascript hacks)

Currently I use Overture and Google ads to get us on the first page of search engines. I get about 200 unique visitors per day mainly from this and the orders generated make the pay per click worthwhile. But of course, it would be nice not to have to pay for our position.

Using the search phrase 'glass blocks' (most popular search, 'glass bricks' a close second) I have had some success with Yahoo.co.uk and MSN.co.uk getting the site listed on the first page of results but I am ranked lower on Yahoo.com and MSN.com. In Google the site comes nowhere, about 200+, so I have recently been working on getting backlinks in hope that this will increase my SERP.

In the past month since reading seo-guys tutorial, I have tried to make better use of h1 tags, keyword density, page titles etc.

Any comments would be much appreciated, especially if you have any ideas how to increase my Google position.

A couple suggestions:
Spammy alt attributes (all glass blocks)
Using text links for navigation would give you some anchor text credit (you could define the background image in css to have the same look)
You start with a couple of large images of text. Why not use H1?
