View Full Version : Killing a PR 6 page
Hello,
This is my first post and I'll start off by saying this is a great forum! A lot of valuable information free of charge and a job well done.
My question:
I am reworking my site based on the advice I have found here.
I have a few pages that have PR6 but bad filenames.
I have created new pages with correct filenames, such as keyword.htm or keyword1-keyword2.htm.
The old pages (about 4) I have left on the server but do not have any internal links to them, but they DO have back links.
Is this the right thing to do, or am I placing too much importance on the filename?
My goal here is to get my ranking back up and work towards that number one spot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Jim, Welcome to the forum I'm glad you like it.
I just need to clarify, are the backlinks for these pages from external sources or from your own internal links that no longer exist. If they are from your own pages and have been dropped and new filenames have taken their place then dont fret, the PR will be lost on the old filenames and gained in the new filenames within an update or 2.
However If you have external links pointing to those pages then applying a 301 redirect (Permanently movedcommand) via your htaccess file to the new page.

Honesly I dont put too much weight on the filename, however when building a site from scratch I make every effort to name them correctly and with kw's in the first place so I dont have to change them later

Thanks for the fast response.
The back links are external - outside my domain.
Also – I have an index page that includes information about Blue Bikes, Red Bikes and Fast bikes which points only to page2. Page two further talks about these bikes. Google ranks me number 1 for Blue Bikes.
I understand this is not the correct method and that I should instead design the index page around Blue Bikes (keywords blue bikes, blue motorcycles) and point to:
page2a- about blue bikes
page2b- about red bikes
page2c- about fast bikes
This then may get me top ranking for Blue bikes on the main page, Red Bikes on page2b, etc…
Am I understanding this correctly?
Again – any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah man sounds like a plausible theory :) All pages reference root "bikes" then the specific pages target the specific appendages thats a good way to go about it
