I was wondering if anyone knew if there are any penalties for having several index pages.

I originally started with index.html and that is the one the domain takes as default. I ended up adding an index.htm , index.php, and index.asp all prefroming different functions for my site.

They all have the same PR and only the html shows up when I view the cache for any of them.

Do this split up my PR or have any harmful effects to it??

Thanks

If I were a search engine I would take it as a spam attempt, however because its not a situation I have run across penalty wise I cant say for sure.

I realize you did not do it for Spam purposes and I am not suggesting so, but this technique could be easily abused so I would create unique pages instead of multiple file extensions for those seperate pages, just to be safe

I agree with seo-guy you should create multiple unique pages otherwise it will be treated as Spam by search engines
