Another n00b question: if I use index.asp (and other .asp files) instead of index.html, will that affect how search engines index my site?

No.

File extension has no importance in rankings.
You can name your file in whatever extensions ( ofcourse, if your webserver server the right HTML content)
The output should be in the format that is understood by robots.

Output of every web scripting language such as PHP, ASP, JSP etc are HTML only.
