Just chatting with my bro Digitalpoint and he is rocking the house for the keyword Ebay (Currently top 10 for ebay in google US) and we were discussing how hard the top 5 is going to be and it it would be possible to beat ebay.com for the keyword ebay.

this isnt some word that has just a few searches or isnt competitive we are talking 141,000,000 results and competing with all the global ebay.whatever sites but seriously is this like trying to outrank Google for Google on Google? Thoughts?

If you want to help our good brother Shawn out in gratitude for all his wicked ass tools feel free to link to his page www.digitalpoint.com/~shawn/ebay_registration.html with the keyword ebay

The KW "google" actually has less comp than ebay - 119,000,000 but I think either can be done. What do your think about throwing up a page on your site and we get eceryone to throw up some links to it ;) What the hell would that say if we could make the page outrank Google for "google"? (I wouldn't be suprised if there was something in the algo to stop that though) I've got a few sites that I can put up sitewides and even a page per site for some serious links :D

I think outranking Google would be more difficult than ebay. The people linking to eBay are less "valuable" links than people linking to Google. It's Universities and big business linking to Google. eBay generally gets links from individuals selling stuff.

Which is why Google is PR10 and eBay is PR8. :)

That being said, my eBay page has been bouncing between #7 and #9 lately...

eBay gets more unique visitors on a month to month basis than even Google does. it would be stupid hard to beat them. if you did there would be a hand edit of the search results.

Wow, looking at that kind of search volume puts my modest ventures to shame. Why stop at ranking for Google and eBay? Go for Amazon, Froogle, and Dealtime. :)

I wouldn't waste my time trying to rank above them. The time I would put into it would be better used on something I had a shot in hell of achieving.

Maybe as an affiliate...

Interesting to figure out what's the cut for major players who aggregate traffic to the big shots.

Lately I saw that superpages.com added both eBay and Dealtime (Shopping.com) feeds/interface to their results pages:

Still moving up though... #6 and #7 now across all data centers. Outranking ebay.ca and ebay.com.au now. :)

Results 1 - 10 of about 170,000,000

And only a PR5!

I think Shawn could take out ebay, I would bet on it in Vegas. ;)

Well, I don't (yet) have aspirations to be #1 and beat ebay.com, but my goals have been moving up. Originally it was top 10, then it was top 5, and now I'm 1 spot away from top 5, and I'm shooting for #3 (between eBay UK and eBay Germany). Even now I don't think I can get #3, but I didn't think I could get any of the previous goals either, so... :)

Nice. I know you could beat ebay.com I just know it. One of these days I want to beat microsoft.com for microsoft and maybe more hehe.

#3 looks doable for you; join another strong co-op and you're there...otherwise, go on a big membership drive (my partner should be signing up shortly to test out a small site, then based on the results will probably roll our larger 50k site out) -- another 50k links (even though they'd be sitewide) can't hurt.

The ad network is growing quite well... 30 or so new sites per day going live. :)

wow I can't believe you are ranking in the top 10 first of all... That's something nice to put on a resume...

How long have you been working on this?

I think #3 spot is do able, but you still have a lot of work to do. I think it's a small chance to get #1 or 2

Started monkeying with it about 5 weeks ago... Broke the top 10 a week after I started. :) About a week ago, I decided to put a 2nd one up there, and it's #11 so far.

well it looks like you have quite the connection for getting backlinks.
Keep up the good work :)

digitalpoint

It's not really a secret connection, mostly the ad network. Although I did throw about 10 PR7 links at it yesterday with no other outbound links. :) But those are from my own sites.

Damn you guys must be great;-)
I would very much like to have any pr 7 site myself, and you got loads of em.. but you got the budget and you got the talent of making great tools that bring great backlinks ;-)
Go onto #1, would be quite fun if this would then be reported ;-)

Are the new servers for the Coop network or the potential traffic when shawn hits No. 1 for ebay?

digitalpoint
12-09-2004, 06:23 PM
{lol} New servers are for the backend of the tools, they aren't going to be serving any web pages.

No DUDE! No

Go to Google type in ebay. Not some product or category "ebay" as the keyword.

Look here: Shawns ebay results (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1&c2coff=1&q=ebay)

His site is www.digitalpoint.com/~shawn/ebay_registration.html

I think this is rather impressive! ;)

Looks like it got hit like a lot of sites did in late December. You could always go to Digitalpoint's forum and look around there too -- he probably mentioned it somewhere.

Looks like the page EBay has now been totally removed from Google Cache. I wonder if Google had something to do with that or if Ebay had something to do with it :D

I have always thought some of the keywords are 'pulled' inside to point where powers that be want

how else can you explain the lame sites at the top of google for MONEY

ebay has to be a 'pulled' domain

I've had a theory lately that Google has started to quietly implement a level of human-editted SERPs, much in the same manner as Yahoo [heavy traffic top 10 keyword phrases getting the most attention] -- it would make sense that ebay might be one of the phrases to not get embarrassed on...and thus they might have decided not to list Shawn's site.

Just a theory...but I'm seeing a lot of things lately that reinforce my thoughts on it.
