Hi everyone!
This is my 1st post here. I've been reading for some time, but now I have this question about an article I read. I've built a rug site with a link directory. This directory has several categories all related to home decorating. Since rugs are decoration of your home, it seemed to me all these categories are related to my rug theme.

After sending out my link trade requests I got 1 back that was reffering to a certain article at http://www.webpronews.com/ about the "link swapping trap". You can read it here: http://www.webpronews.com/ebusiness/sitepromotion/wpn-3-20040810TheLinkSwappingTrap.html The idea of this article is that swapping links is no good and that you should focus on content so that blogs, sites and whatever will link to you. non-recips I guess.

Now I always thought link trades were good as long as you kept them relevant to your site's theme. In my case related to rugs and home decoration. I know non-recip links to your site are better than recips, but I'm having some difficulty with the idea of link swapping harming your position in google... If you keep it relevant and don't build any link farms it should help your position in the search engines right?

I'd like your opinion on this article. Link swapping good or bad?

BTW: you may find this message on another forum too, because I'm trying to get as many opinions on this... I'll apologize in advance.

edit: here's another sceptical article about link trading: http://www.webpronews.com/ebusiness/sitepromotion/wpn-3-200411175ReasonsWhyLinkSwappingIsKillingYourWebsite.html
