Way back in the day.... (sigh here), I got started at HTML Goodies (http://www.htmlgoodies.com). I found it to be a great resource in that it took you through specific tasks, and slowly.
I'm sure there are other resources out there and I'm not sure if the site I referenced is still current. If you're using software to build your pages I'd search that first but there's no substitute for a good background in HTML.

NP :D
Also-as far a BLs go, I would suggest breaking up your sig a bit. Since both links go to the same place only the first will count for the SEs plus you may want to have just one KW per link-that will make it stonger.

Hello,
Your sites on boards are great, how long did it take you to develop the skills to work on dreamweaver?
I am new to the industry and am wondering whether it would benefit me to learn dreamweaver and flash to help become a better a SEO.
Thanks,
KJF

Dreamweaver is very easy to learn. I suggest using that & learning enough HTML to clean up the garbage that it leaves in the code though ;) Flash won't help your SEO, but it is a great tool. I use it for parts of a site-but not the whole thing. Go to www.seo-guy.com to see an example of how SEO guy used flash properly.
Good luck. Hang around here and you will have the skills you need in no time!

Thanks for the reply,
I really like the flash used on the Seo-guy and I really like that car........
Fast cars are the only thing that keeps me motivated to work 12 hour days.
Do you suggest any book on learning Dreamweaver,

Lambo,
You can pretty much learn to use dreamweaver immediately. I did what I needed to my first try.

P.S. over time you just get faster at it.

No!
Just my opinion but DW and the rest of the wysiwyg editors throw in a lot of crap to make their pages. You end up with less than stellar coding and pages that are way over what they should be size wise.
Spend the time and learn straight html and css. With limited knowledge of both you can still create nice pages. As your skills improve by "creating as you learn" by the time you're "up to speed" you will be able to crank out properly coded, efficient, se friendly pages.
Just an opinion( for all you wysiwyg phreaks)!
WYSIWYG :shoot:

Thanks for the advice from the both points,
There are two things I would want to know....
1. How much HTML, CSS, do you really need to know to build pages (time wise, level of experience, etc.
2. Is learning HTML an inevitable skill that you mus t have to truly become a skilled SEO?
Thanks,
KJF

to answer both questions i would say:
1- you can build static html pages with text and images in as fast as 3-5 days, you just need to find an easy html tutorial, CSS comes later
2- Although many disagree, but I believe that learning html is inavitable to true SEOs. On-site optimization is very important, and it frequently requires basic html knowledge. Let alone "avoiding penalties", which also sometimes requires html in order to manually edit text blocks, redirection, h1, h2, etc...
This does not mean you CANNOT do it without html, it simply means that knowing html gives you total control on your page's appearance
1. How much HTML, CSS, do you really need to know to build pages (time wise, level of experience, etc.
It depends on how good you want to be ;)
2. Is learning HTML an inevitable skill that you mus t have to truly become a skilled SEO?
Absolutely. I knew a hell of a lot about design before I came here and made quite a few really hot sites, but I had always just used DW and left the code as is. When I came here I found out how bloated the code was, not to mention the effect it was having on SEO. IMO-you need to know HTML very well. Think about it, would you take your car to a mechanic that knew how to put parts in but didn't know why he was doing it?

Good point about the mechanic,
That being the case what is the best process to begin research for keywords for a new client??

When you started did you just go through all the exercises lesson by lesson... then build something? or did you just start trying to build a site simple site and just keep modifying it after every lesson and making it more advanced using what you learned from each lesson?
Thanks.

So far I have just gone through the tutorials, the company I am with is having me do so simple optimization work currently.
Using wordtracker is interesting, I wonder if I am using most efficiently. Have you had any luck with it.?

I know you asked this of jlknauff but I thought that I would chime in and say that I did both.
I used to make a test directory and test pages. I would just try new things and see how they worked. If they didn't work the way that I wanted I would try to see why not.
I learn best that way. Just by doing. I still do the same thing today with new things.
Before you know it ya got it down and then realize that there is a ton more to learn! <grin>

Thanks for the advice,
Your right about just doing things,
the chinese say that " a thousand mile journey begins with the first step"
I have learned that the hard way so far with SEM. .... There is a lot to learn, as far as link exchanges go have you heard anything good about them.
