Subdomain with same domain

Does SE penalized sites who gets back link from different subdomains but the same domain? Or does link from this sub domains count as back link?

e.g. sub1.domain.com, sub2.domain.com, sub3.domain.com and so on....

No, but don't abuse it. If you're thinking that you can just use subs to get a bunch of links don't get your hopes up-it won't work very well.

I don't plan to do that, I brought out this question because there are few people who use the same domain like tripod.com who have subdomain on it and asking for reciprocal link.

Provided that it is set up properly it's fine in most cases-but from what I know, free hosts like tripod are usually ignored by SEs.
