I'll be honest I would never submit my site through such a service as they rarely get you listed anywhere, however getting back to your original question yes listings help increase your link popularity just like any other site, as long as the links are spiderable and the page has a cache in google

Directories are good. Some will even outrank you in the SERPS.
So it's a double edge knife. I always went for it.
If you are outranked by one, chances are you'll get the visitor anyway.
With time you'll eventually pass them in the SERPS.

I wouldn't count on getting listed though. I have submitted a few sites to them and they only included 1 of them. I have a few that they say are still in editorial review (over 6 months now).

Try those two directory listings, there are some okay directories in there with lower level pages still having PR 3 and 4. If you can get listed in ten of them it will add a fair bit to your PR as well as giving you backlinks.

well, don't just count on NOT getting listed in dmoz either

some categories are over-moderated, even. you'll be listed (or rejected) within days in some categories.
