I found this site http://www.googlealert.com that runs a free service that searches google for your search terms, then emails you if there are any new sites in the top 50 positions.
I think you could use this to track backlinks and learn about new competition. Do you guys think this could be a useful SEO tool?

I think this specific tool/functionality is one of the few things that DigitalPoint does NOT have! ;-)

Interesting... looks like they got permission from Google. This from their FAQ (http://www.googlealert.com/faqs.php)s:
What is Google Alert's relationship with Google?
Google Alert is unaffiliated with Google, although we are in regular contact with them. Google Alert uses Google's Web APIs to perform its searches. Google has generously provided Google Alert with a high-capacity Web APIs key for our needs, and agreed to the use of the Google Alert name and googlealert.com domain. Google has agreed to our release of premium paid Google Alert services.
Signed up for their paid service last week. good stuff.

Yes it's a great tool. I've been using it for more then a year now.
Gives me instant notification of new players in my industry by email.
Also lets me know when i'm moving in the serps without having to go to a page and verify by myself.
