Great ranking, horrible page - Help!

Hello All,

Well, I lurk around these forums quit a bit, but I have finally
run into a problem that I really need a firm answer to before
I go messing up a good thing.

I've been working on a website for a client of mine, and her
website ranks in the top 5-10 in Google, Yahoo, and MSN
for search terms that are ones we do not want to loose...

Here's my problem.

One of the pages that ranks number one, and we receive
a ton of traffic from, is unfortunately, one horrific page.

By that I mean, as far as content goes, theres not enough
there to keep her visitors around for any length of time.

The main website was created by another company, and
she has asked me to do some work on the site to make
it more user friendly, and interactive for her visitors.

I need to figure out a way to redirect the visitors to this
page to another page with more content that lends itself
to the subject matter at hand, and without loosing her
search engine positioning.

Is there a way to send them to another page without
changing any content on the current page?

I have read that the standard meta redirect tag will not
be looked upon by the search engines as a good thing.

Is there any other way that is search engine safe?

The only way to redirect a page to an other without being looked as a spam attempt is a 301 redirect. This will stop the server from serving the page and just give the adresse of the new page.

Since the new page will replace the old one, chances are it will not retain the actual rankings if the content is different than the ugly page. Different page, different content, different rankings.
