I launched a new site a couple of weeks ago. I've been surprised by 120 requests for the favicon.ico.

I know that IE requests favicon.ico when someone adds the site to their favourites. But does it request the icon every time someone visits the site using IE whether or not they add it to their favourites? I can't believe 120 people have bookmarked the site.

At least Firefox and Opera requests the favicon.ico on default (you don't have to bookmark the website, just surf the website).

You can just make a bmp and name it favicon.ico

Seo-guy should have done that ages ago. This is one of the last big forums without a favicon. (The shame!) :o

Ah ha - I turned on the browser report:
467: MSIE
65: Mozilla
25: Safari

If Mozilla (presumably mostly firefox) and Safari (Apple) automatically request favicon.ico then that'll account for 110 out of the 120 requests.

Thanks for clearing that one up.
You can just make a bmp and name it favicon.ico
Yes you can do that, but it won't work properly in all browsers. Personally I use a free favicon-plugin for Adobe Photoshop.

I always just make a 16x16 jpg and then use http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/ to make a favicon out of it :)

I can make one, but then I prefer to have a original psd-file to work with since I prefer to use Photoshop (I think the quality are better when using ps).

If seo-guy has PS himself I recommend the plugin found on this page:
