He's obviously not after the supposed PR benefits of a first page position in forum memberlists. :)

I used to have big problems with this on my own forums - when I looked into it, it turned out to be pretty endemic to vBulletins, as the memberlist is usually ordered alphabetically by default. There's an article on the issue here:

In vBulletins there's an option to disable the memberlist feature anyway in the main list of options. And if you'd like to disable the memberlist, and don't want the dead link carried on every page of your forum, you can remove it manually from your forum template:
