Hello All,

I'd like to request a site review :D

OK here we go,

My URL: http://www.timesheetsmts.com

Targetted Key Words (figures in brackets are searches per day on Overture):
timesheet software (108.4)
time tracking software (190.3)
free timesheet software (4.1)
free timesheet (11.2)
project time tracking (17)
timesheet (402.1)
time sheet (272.6)
time sheet software (61.2)
timesheets (?)

SEO Done So Far:

I have 5 key pages that I am trying to optimise, these are

index.htm
freesoftware.htm
timesheetslite.htm
timesheetsmts.htm
resources.htm
/phpBB2/index.htm

My internal link structure is such that there is a text link to all of these pages from every page. My other content pages have only javascript links except from the sitemap.htm page where text links are available for spidering for all my content. Sitemap.htm has a text link from these key pages to make sure it is spidered.

I've tried to target the keywords as follows for my key five pages:

index.htm : timesheet software,time-tracking software, project time tracking
freesoftware.htm :timesheet software, free timesheet software, time tracking, timesheet freeware, free timesheet
timesheetslite.htm : timesheet software, free timesheet software, time tracking, timesheet freeware, free timesheet
timesheetsmts.htm :timesheet software, expense reporting, time and expense tracking, project time tracking
resources.htm : timesheet software, resources, timesheets

In addition I've tried to re-write the copy to include my chosen keywords on each page. I've also tried to make use of keywords in anchor text where possible, as well as alt tags for images, and title tags for links. Other small things are including the full URL for the home link, and using my main keyword as the anchor text for this link.

Recently I've posted a couple of decent articles on the resources page but I'm not sure how best to use these to build visitors.

I've also recently posted a new site (http://www.moving-target-software.htm) that is more of a company focussed site. It includes a weblog that I am hoping will build some traffic and thus be a decent referrer to my product site. I'm not sure if this is ethical or not but the weblog will (and does) contain some valuable information so I'm pretty comfortable with it. I've spent a lot of time trying to search for suitable links and have my site listed on a ton of shareware sites and appropriate directories (google/dmoz/etc etc) but the vast majority of these links are worthless. Hence the reason for starting this new site. I'm hoping it might create a PR4 or PR5 link at sometime in the future.

Results of all this so far for my keywords in Google are:

timesheet software: position 27
time tracking software: No ranking
free timesheet software: position 7&8
free timesheet: position 3&4
project time tracking: no ranking
timesheet: no ranking
time sheet : no ranking
time sheet software: no ranking
timesheets: position 126

My efforts for the last 3 weeks have been largely focussed on the keyword "timesheet software" which has been quite successful, improving traffic by around 20% for the last two weeks. However, I'd really like to pick up on some of the "timesheet", "time tracking software", and "time sheet" action. I'm stumped as how to do this without killing my ranking for "timesheet software".

Soooo, please review my site and how well I've done the above SEO. What I've done wrong, poorly, or should have done differently. What else can I do?Be harsh, I've got big shoulders :) .

Hi

Looks like you have been doing alot of work since you last posted this site. You have addressed most of what was said before so thats good. As you have stated you are already getting some first page positions but on the lesser searched for terms.

I quickly had a scout through the first page of results for "timesheet software" and really I think all you are up against now is getting more backlinks with your targeted keywords and phrases. Mix em up a bit with the different phrases you have mentioned above.

these two pages I feel you could add in more keywords somewhere for timesheet software etc...

http://www.timesheetsmts.com/tsmtsfeatures.htm
http://www.timesheetsmts.com/timesheetsmts.htm

and also the screenshots that you have. You could maybe put the shots into your page (may need to resize a little) and have descriptions beneath explaining the screens. This will give you more of an opportunity to have some more keyworded pages and it will mean extra pages to your site which will help.

One other thing I noticed is that your forum doesn't have any links back to the main pages of the site, you can edit templates/subSilver/overall_footer.tpl to add the links in.

Also if your up for a bit of modding it will be well worth making your forum pages spiderable by following seo bob's thread here http://www.seo-guy.com/forum/showthread.php?t=119

This mod will make all of the urls of the forum static and will help with google being able to spider your forum pages, again adding to the overall size of your site.

Good luck with the site and let us know of further improvements. ;)

Hello GByte,

Thanks for the advice, I'll get working on it. Actually just typing out the questions brought up a lot of things to me that I could do. I'm not happy with the targetting I'm doing on certain pages, and I think I'm pursuing some keyword phrases that are not worth it.

Again thanks for the advice, it's off to notepad to make some more HTML changes! Forgot to say, thanks for the phpBB advice, I did the spidering thing a week ago, but didn't know about the link thing.

hey no probs

It does help sometimes to take a step back and put things into persective. Its very easy to just work away and not notice where you could be doin better.

I would'nt discount any of the keywords you are goin after, the lesser searched for terms can also be terms that less people optimise sites for, so the smaller ones can all add up. But I am sure you will get a better idea of this over time.

good luck!

Yeah I think thats a nice job well done; I guess like Gbyte says you could go after less competetive terms ( dependent on the PR ) and if ya move up the scale go for the big fish. Perform SEO to each page for a particular term etc but well done !

Thanks sparko. I'm gradually working my way through each page targetting 4 keywords or phrases. I've decided to target the prime ones with my highest PR pages and disperse the lower ones through the lower PR ones. On Gbytes advice I've re-constructed my screenshots pages for more keywords. Longer term I'll do a page per screenshot for more content.

On a happy note my prime term 'timesheet software' has moved from position 50 to 21 in the SERPS in the last three weeks  . On a less happy note I'm really struggling with links, but I'll keep on trying.
