definition of "backlinks" on google

Hi ,
I have a question about how Google define a "backlink" , I have already know if a link using <a ..... </a> will be counted as a link , but after reviewing many directory including Yahoo, they all somehow using a either javascript or cgi script to count your click then pop up another window for linked site.
when people mouse over the link , they use javascript to show your Url address at status bar , I was alway thinking the link is successfully done, but after I view their souce, I found out this "trick" . Please ..if someone can answer me will google count those kind of link as a backlink or not.

Sinocomp, Welcome to the forums. The easiest way to really tell is to locate a couple of other links that have been there awhile on a PR4+ page and check their backlinks.

and both them require me to put their link on my HOME page. so I don't know if this kind of "backlink" worth or not.

Oh my dear................. thank you for the info, I will start reviewing my backlinks to see if anyone using javascript!
why they still have such a high ranking ?!~ :confused:

url.biz was ranked high b/c i believe they bought a backlink from a PR9 site. I saw their site listed on that page, which got a PR9 b/c it was linked from a PR10 page on Google. But I believe Google took out that link just recently.

Also, I believe you get a real text backlink if you write an article on url.biz. I have been meaning to write an article, but haven't had time...

You are right , Google took out all the PR under
http://www.url.biz/articles/ *
and all site info pages just last Saturday. original the page of my site in Url.biz has PR 6, they all gone right now. only their section page still keep PR.

However, about the articles, I have checked the links (because I wrote some articles too), they ALL javascript... no real link at all ...

Feel kind of bad to find out this ..... :confused:

maybe someone can help me. I have links from microsoft cmall biz directory, url.biz and a couple of other small directories. but when i search on google for links to my site, i find 0. I believe i am indexed on google, so I'm confused.. I just want to make sure google is reading my links!!

however only pr4+ will show in a link: search. (but those that don't show still count)

steaprok - Create a sitemap with a href's to all your pages, so your have something for google to spider, so that you can make sure all your pages get in. Submit to dmoz, get backlinks and more backlinks.

During last weekend, I study many sites about their backlinks, and find very confuse , from the above thread: it clearly stat that javascript link will not be counted as a backlink. However, check following site,
url : www.citymoda.com
and check "link:www.citymoda.com" at google
you will find most of backlink is from www.coupon-finder.com
but when you go to www.coupon-finder.com , the entire site do not use direct link at all , everything must go through their server to either count or whatever..

second , google just update and add my listing at yahoo's directory to be who backlink to me , I went to check yahoo directory, they are not using direct link to link to my site too,

If only directly link can be counted as backlink, any one has better way to explain this ?
