google puts an over importance on links to you site... so much so that there is now a entire industy of link exchange and link generation , thus watering down actual good links. google needs to start adjustign for this and or put more weight/importance on something else.

Page rank is a measure of the number and quality of backlinks for each page.

The source of those links? This is a question we have been struggling with for some time ...

Some believe that they have to be from different IP addresses (unrelated sites).
Others think that site wide links (page footer links) are discounted.

Google is currently looking too eliminate link spam. What works today may get you penalized in the future.

For PR doesn`t matter from where they came, for SERP it matters.

yaa for PR that doesnot matter that they should come from different IP.and the no of links works on yahoo and msn but on google it takes relevant and qualitative links.

Not if what works today is white hat SEO ( accepted to be so by most white hat SEOs and SEs together ).

Google needs constant updates because white hat stuff changes to black hat pretty quick.;)

So tell me this ... which forms of LINK SPAM are white hat?

Site wide links (on every page)
Buying high PR links from unrelated sites
Linking dozens (or hundreds) of your own sites

I used to think that backlinks were important (and they are), but here is an example:

I put up this site about a month ago: http://www.homeowners-insurance-guide.net/
It started out with a PR 0 as all sites do.
As far as I know, I have 4 inbound links (Google is claiming that I have 0)

HOWEVER, this past PR update Google graced me with a PR 5 on my home page and a PR 4 on my link page. I have no idea what the factors were in giving my site such a good PR.

Anyone have any insite on this one?

You have done very well for such a new site!

I did find at least one link from a PR-5 site .... but this site is so new that not a lot is showing up in the indexes yet.

Google only shows a sampling of links that it knows about ... however they will use ALL links that are found to calculate page rank.

Most webmasters use MSN or YAHOO to track their links... once they have been indexed. :D
