I've been tryinig to optimise my index/home page for my main KW phrase and am struggling to move forward in serps.

someone has suggested I actually optimise an inner page for my main phrase

Any views ?

Optimize the page that you have the most inbounds for. Try to ensure that your KW is in that anchor text.

done that - didnt work

that's why I thought of doing an inner page - it works for everything else I am targeting except my main phrase (2 words)

Personally I don't thing Google differentiates between outer/inner it's just from where it arrives. Your back links, are they competitive (quality/quantity) with those ranking higher?

Leeds1, If it's the site in your sig...
Results 1 - 10 of about 65 linking to www.teneric
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,650 linking to www.bplans
Results 1 - 10 of about 550 linking to www.businessplans
Results 1 - 10 of about 886 linking to www.morebusiness

I looked at the first three popping up in your BL's and searched the text for "business plans", the closest I got was business planning.

you should pick your keywords based on how realistic it is to rank for them, as well.

sure, some people might say "if you're good, you can rank for anything" but your budget certainly comes into it.
