Hoping someone can help me. MSN has both the .com and index.html version of my home page listed in their index. I understand that this can lead to duplicate content issues. I contacted my server and he says that I can't use any of the url code re-writes because I am not on a dedicated server.

I would like to get this fixed but don't know how.

Any suggestions.

I'm not using dedicated hosting on some sites but I have have htaccess installed and working. I'd think about moving hosts.

Make sure you have all your internal navigation pointing exclusively to the root eg "/" and not "/index.htm" and always build backlinks to http://www.example.com and not http://www.example.com/index.htm.

Once an SE has started to index an index.htm it's very difficult to get it to drop one without a redirect, and yes you could one day have problems.

I have seen this happening many times when people, by inattentiviness somewhere within their inner pages link to the home page using the "index.html" version. You should check your pages more closely, maybe somewhere there's a link to your home page using the "index.html" version, otherwise it is pretty weird for MSN to index a page it doesn't finds a link to.
