www vs non www
Ive spent days trying to setup a 301 redirect with no luck. Looong story short, i need to change hosts in order to setup the 301.
Could you give me your opinions, is it worth the headache to switch just to have the www and non-www 301 setup?

It can be done with .htaccess... but I just use the webmastertool to set that... cause I don't care about Yahoo and MSN not getting it right.

On a Windows server you can do the 301 on the server (set up a dummy site with the non-www host header, remove the non-www from the real sites host header, and permanently redirect the non-www version) works like a treat and takes about 5 minutes.
The other option is to have ISAPI_Rewrite (or something similar) installed and you can rewrite your rules in the .htaccess file (version 3) or the httpd.ini file (version 2) just as you would on an Apache server.

If you use ASP or any dynamic script for your page, you can check the 'www' and redirect passing 301 if necessary.

well, I ghot a similar problem for a client, huge problems to set up very basic stuff on a windows server, especially becauese his hosting didn't want to give me access etc ....
I only work with windows servers a couple of times and each time all kind of stupid problems that causes unnecessary waste of time, sure I confess, me not being used to those servers was part of the problem, but still ... I NEVER work with windows servers again !! I told my client to change server or SEO service ... he had a really very bad hosting anyway ... he did so and now everything works smooth ...
cheers,
Michiel

Funny how the environment you are used to working on saves so much time and energy vs. moving to a new OS, language or configuration for a customer. I hear ya!
