how crucial is it to get on dmoz?
I have applied to get on dmoz a few months ago, although I know this is a very long process.
But how important is dmoz because it seems the major search engines put a hefty weighting for sites listed in dmoz. Does anyone have a before and after indication of the difference it can make for google and yahoo. |
Honestly DMOZ is great to have but it is not the be all and end all and you can do just fine without it, it is not like you get into DMOZ and all of a sudden you get a huge jump in serps. in fact you will see little to none at all, it just helps the sites reputation, the link isnt even a keyword so you dont get that benefit.
I would not cry if I were not in dmoz, in fact I have lots of sites that arent and they fair just fine in serps |
if you want to be in DMOZ, then u have to wait for atleast 6 months and there are lots of sites waiting for a year and so.
DMOZ listing wont boost your site. But you may get some one way incoming links from directories which uses DMOZ databases. The only benefit is that you can check the PR in the google directory before it updates the toolbar. |
The main reason I thought it would be of benefit was to get those links from directorys using dmoz.
Are these considered quality links? since I did some reasearch on the keyword for "gadgets" and found that the top site www.gadgets.com most of it's backlinks were from these type of directorys. but is their high ranking like this because their domain is their keyword? |
yes you are right. keywords in the domain plays a vital role in high rankings.

That depends on the category, or rather on the category editor. I have a website that got in the dmoz in 6 days (in September 2004) after submitting. Cheap webhosting |

I had a similar situation. I read up on the proper way to submit my real estate site and was accepted in under 60 days. |
Check the DMOZ board, it doesn't take up to a year uaually, but it can do in some cases due to the volume of sites we have to index. I look after my cat well and update once a month on average.

I asked about this in another forum. I was concerned because I've submitted to dmoz twice and still am not in. I was told that much is up to the individual editor and if you do not have something unique on your site that others in that category don't offer, you won't get in. I don't know if that's true, but pass it along as information I've recently received.
And in any case, if submitting doesn't get me into dmoz I don't think there's much I can do about it--although I'd love to hear from someone who knows the secret if there is one. |
dude, my DMOZ listing has brought me less than 10 uniques in the last year. Completely overrated in mt opinion.
