a typical seo 'tunnelvision' question...
[there are many many others]
"will adding a forum to my site improve my rankings?"

this is a real query that i have heard asked many times. this question has much more to do with whether your visitors will....[a]...benefit from a forum...and [b]...participate in a forum..than whether a forum with achieve any seo benefits. an inappropriate addition of a forum that adds no usefullness and has no user participation can sour a perfectly designed web site very quickly. the long-term site commitment and viability of a forum needs to be accessed prior to considering any seo benefits of one.

I truly believe that if you believe in your site and like what you're doing, Google will like you as well.

You will be most likely to create content, add content, keep it fresh and implement a navigation system that is visitor friendly, which Google loves.

What really gets me are some of the new seo's thinking they can "beat" or outsmart Google.

If you can't beat 'em, join in :)

i don't think you can beat or outsmart google, you just have to do what they tell you to do in the best way you can and make your site the best it possibly be can for your customers. your customers should be thought of first as they should in every part of your business.

I like how this forum is ranked for "web design" in the new msn beta search :)

How about:
Concentrate on two things for your site - Usability, then get links like mad to your site, so that Google will like it... ;)

Funny, this thread is officially one year old two days from now.

wow, I notice there is a response to this like every other month or so :D

I believe that a site that is truly well organized and designed for humans will do well in the SERPs. If it is easy for you to find whatever without the search box, it will likely be easy for the bots to find whatever also.

If you still want to worry a little about the bots, spend time with your title, h1 and meta tags and anchor text.

I've always felt it's about a balance between what your target market expects in a web site and what the SEs want. I mean, say your target market doesn't care about the site not being user-friendly, then you can go for heavy SEOing. But if they want a really cool customer-orientated site, you're going to have to get clever with your SEO work (possibly relying on more off-page factors like links).

Beat Google! Think again, can only be done short term and has negative long term effects, try beating EGGS!

It's better to find out what Google likes and do things right than trying to trick them and get yourself penalized :)

5 gold stars and top marks for those that quite rightly advise just doing it right in the first place.

I totally agree with Starbug & SiteTutor. WebToucan is hitting the right spot too.

It's a real breath of fresh air and a delight to see some real seo experts that aren't tempted by the dark side. hehe.... lets face it - it's nothing like it's cracked up to be anyway.
