I understand Yahoo SEO about as well as I understand women

which is pretty bad.

Google is heavy on backlinks with anchor text in the IBL. MSN really seems to like keyword URL's, keyword domains, and keyword stuffed documents. I added myself to the MSN Small business directory, and I am not sure if that is helping very mcuh.

I recently noticed a site high in the SERP's for Google. It just used hidden text on the page, and the keyword density was probably like 70%, so I am starting to think that a specific keyword density around 3% to 8% is a myth.

Nonetheless, I am totally clueless with Yahoo, while I am quite succesful with Google and MSN.

What does one need to do to get good SERP rankings for somewhat competitive terms in Yahoo ?

Thanks,

Ben

Hi,

Yahoo still likes on page factors (title, <hx> tags etc.) more than Google does, but as we always say, just because you see a site ranking well in Google with hidden text, it rarely means the hidden text got it there.... check it's backlinks before you jump to conclusions.

Keyword density is only used by Google to look for spamming. Google ranks for on page factors with a complex dynamic between title, headings, text on the page, position of the text, (usage and proximity of keywords in backlink anchor text) etc. and adds them like you would add reciprocal space vectors (if you remember your senior school maths).

Don't get tempted to stuff a page with keywords, it looks horrible to visitors and isn't necessary to rank well - get backlinks and use your keyword phrases intelligently on the page. Smart SEO....

(jknauff is quite a fan of the MSNSBD)

Cheers,
Paz.

Yahoo likes links. Get more and more links with your targeted KWs in the anchor text. Don't do anything that is angainst Yahoo's content policy guidlines located here.

Does Yahoo give a lot of weight to the DMOZ directory and its own directory? Perhaps it is doesn't like the young age of my new domain (three months) ?

I believe Yahoo likes DMOZ and they defenately like their own directory. You can get more for your $300 if you do smaller one-time fee directories.

Is this because Yahoo gives weight to "authority" sites? Which smaller one-time directories are worthwhile?

Thanks,

Ben

I like site-sift and abilogic for starters.. Pay the fee for the extra links in abilogic.

I'm having the same problem. I launched a site about 3 weeks ago; MSN spidered it in 4 hrs and Google in 9, which I was very excited about. But Yahoo still hasn't poppped in. I have no clue what's wrong and I hate to mess with it too much since the other 2 are doing so well. Any ideas?

The problem of the post isn't not being indexed by Yahoo, but not ranking well in Yahoo.
