low competition
Hi,
I am working a website which provides Free Phone Service to the US people. This site has a PR and all pages are indexed in Google. Should I target low competitive keywords for this?
If searching in google with quotation marks like "sony blue ray" yields less number of sites, does it mean the keyword has less competition. Is it good practice to determin the keywords?
What about SEO Elite? Is it good software or working manual is better?
thanks

Hi,
You can check ur keywords on wordtracker and overture by this tool
http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/
Also, do not check the competitions by writing "keyphrase", it only gives you those sites containing that exact keyphrase. Its not a good practice.
You can use other paid tools also, if interested.
U can check the keywords on google itself also.

Hi,
I'm also a beginner at this, but logically speaking you should be correct regarding the quotation marks. I guess the websites which don't have the exact phrase are easier to beat than the ones who do.
Regarding SEO Elite I haven't tried it. I stumbled over Internet Business Promoter, which seems to be very good. I use it together with Arelis, a link exchange program from the same company.
Like mentioned, I'm also a beginner, so if this is completely wrong, please someone correct me

Hello Everyone, great topic. I don't think I would go after words with quotes I would concentrate on writing good detailed content on the topic as well find keywords that have lower volumes then working up to the big guys. Make it fresh and a different spin on the topic. Its all about the BUZZ Everything depends on your marketing budget towards the type of tools used. I use many tools to find keywords but I first study my competitors to see what they use in their copy. Make sure you have your notepad ready...LOL
As for the comment:

I use SEO Elite in conjunction with others to find more about my competitors and Brad Callen does write some great software.
Before you begin your quest on this new project you need to understand your market and your competition before you build.
1.)study the top 10 sites in MSN,Google and Yahoo and see what you are against with your largest kw.
2)Build an excel spreadsheet and store your kw data within a tab this is where I keep rankings as well as any other data for this site.
3) Build the project with your target terms.
After this you will have your work cut out because there are a ton of other things needed.
Hope this helps.

That's not always true... if you are lucky you can rank well for a non-competitive term and get a good trickle of traffic.
If you can rank well for lot's of these keyphrases, then it all adds up, but it's a lot of work!
Cheers,
Paz.

I, totally agree with Paz with this note. Sometimes, you got well ranked on high competitive words but not on less competitive words. You should need to emphasis on every keyword and keyphrases because noone can say, what would a client search for your website.

You have one juicy big keyphrase that brings 500 visits/day, and then G decides to do an algo change... you lose the key and the 500 visits.
You have a site with 50 keyphrases that brings 10 visits/day... you get the same trafic, but on the algo change you lose 5 of them, so your traffic goes down to 475 visits...
Doesn't mean you don't go for the big one, if you get it it's cool... but when you lose a few of these big ones over an algo change it's not the thrill and those little ones can keep you afloat...

jocelyn very good point, I have 2 separate tabs in my excel spread sheet.
My Top Keywords: Example "Merchant Account" 32 Million Results in G I can optimize for a ton of other terms and still go after my main keyword.
I can substitute: "Merchant Account" by adding words in front or in back. These are still good volume traffic.
Business Merchant Account
internet merchant account
online merchant account
merchant account provider
merchant account credit card processing
and many others to gain more traffic and keep myself from falling to hard with an algo change. This is a very tuff industry but if done well you can be very successful. I have over 2k of keywords I have in my other tab in excel and as I build I mark it off that I have used it. It help me keep track per site of what keywords I am using and what I rank for....LOL I hope this helps.

When your link building, how do you change up your link text. Do you just go down the list alternating on every new link?
