How long till 404's removed

Hi all.

I have redone a site to try and save it in Google.

Yet all the old pages which are now 404's are still indexed in Google as part

of the site.

eg site

I have added

<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOARCHIVE">
<META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOSNIPPET">

yet the pages still persist.. its been months now

I think Google is way behind and can't actually manage all the data it has.

Damn annoying.

Cheers
Merlin

Yes, I'm seeing lot's of cached pages from October 28th that are now missing from your web sites...

But I think you've done things the wrong way around. You should leave the old pages in place with the noarchive noindex nofollow tags, and delete then after they have been removed from Google's index....

See here
http://www.google.com/remove.html

Cheers,
Paz.

Set up 301 redirects for the pages that have been removed.

aaah

the 404 page has the meta tags on it, so if any SE hits such a page it should be removed should it not.

No. A 404 is not indexed. Putting meta tags in it will not do anything.

It will direct the SEs to a new page at the server level of they will never even see the 404.

how

Hey guys I have been wondering, how can you set up a 301 redirect for a page? I thought you could only do it for a directory....since you have to place a .htaccess into the directory. Maybe there is a way to custom write the 301 instead of just saying redirect 301 Http://www blah

Please let me know how it gets done for single pages.
