sub domains, too many?

How many sub domains are too many, ie.

shoes.domain.com
boots.domian.com
skates.domian.com
slippers.domian.com
and so on.

I might have 15 or so but all different content for them along the same theme thou.

As many as you like
This is pretty much the same as adding folders like
domain.com/shoes/
domain.com/boots/

They are treated the same.

People used to get these sub-domains ranked individually... so someone could have multiple results on the first page of Google.
But the search engines have since fixed this loophole.

The problem with sub domains is diluting your content, i think it takes more effort to for that kind of site to rank in terms of search engine ranking because the effort it being diluted.

Do not worry that much about the numbers. But I personally prefer folders but anyway after addition of subdomains, work on link addition as well.

There is no too many sub-domains. Google doesn't have any problem in it.

Instead of sub-domains, I would prefer sub-folders.
