new design problems

My site needs a completely new design/layout.

The only problem is that I'm getting great search engine traffic now and I'm afraid of losing PR / search engine placement when the new layout rolls in.

Anyone ever face a similar situation as I am? I'm really torn, cause on one hand I'm thinking "if it's not broke (search engine traffic) dont fix it" and on the other hand I realize that a new design is essential for growth.

i'm only nervous because I'm making a mliving off this one site now and I cant afford to lose alot of money.

just use 301 redirects from the old to the new pages for the pr problem

"if it's not broke (search engine traffic) dont fix it"
just make a new design up and wait untile a slow seassion to update.

The design/layout shouldn't make much of a difference at all if you keep the page text, titles. H1's the same. Certainly you wouldn't change the page names (URL's) so you wouldn't have to fret with 301's.

Oh I am keeping the same URLs - but I'm changing around links and everything - I'm afraid pages will lose PR

Changing the links around???? Just make sure the links are spiderable and send them to the most important pages.

You "CAN NOT" loose PR by changing the design of your site, many web designers/developers/ who ever elese is out there think that they will loose something if they change their design.

Here are a few things to note when you are re-doing your web design:

1) MAKE SURE THE NEW DESIGN HAS SPIDERABLE LINKS !!!! IMPORTANT !!!
If your new design does not have spiderable links they "YOU WILL" loose all your pages within Google becuase what they do is follow your link structure from your Home Page and go up. If it can not spider links then you will loose those pages.

2) If you are already doing well in Google then try to keep the same KW density and don't overstuff your pages with keywords thinking you will rank a little better.

3) Using an SEO to help:
A couple of things you may want to ask your self first are:

A) "Do I know enough about SEO and how Search Engines work to go through with the re-design" If the answer is NO then you should have an SEO go over your design to make sure its ok before it goes live.

B) "Can I afford to loose my current google rankings" If not then you should consult an SEO.

My 2 cents.

I changed the design completely but just made sure the links and content stayed the same and it had no effect on my rankings. If you change links or content, then it may have an impact.

just make sure you keep to proper SEO principals with the redesign, and you should be fine. You will have the same authority and allinanchor scores for your site, so it really should not take a hit
