Redirects or No? How do I deal with several domains pointing to one site?

Hello All,

I've got a new site idea that I'm tossing around and would like to protect my domain name from cybersquaters copycatting the name. My thought is that I want:

www.cooldomain.com
www.cool-domain.com and
www.thatsacooldomain.com for starters.

Questions:
1) How do I do a redirect so that all domains point to www.cooldomain.com without getting penalized for mirror sites (I've heard of 301 redirects but have never tried it and don't know how to do it).
2) If I do a redirect of several domains to one primary domain can I build backlinks for the feeder domains? Would that provide any benefit?
3) I could just create separate sites entirely and have the feeder sites display very obvious links to the main site. Then I could build backlinks for all of them. But would that make sense?

How would other people approach this? I like www.cooldomain.com because it will have good recall for people, but I like www.cool-domain.com because it will have a slight advantage in serps for "cool domain" search querries.

Make sense I hope?

Thanks in advance!

I am into the same dilemma... eagerly waiting for other replies, my opinion is 301 redirect is the best option.
