Hi,

All the major SE's look for spam, most often easily found in the form of repetitive text on a page, and across web pages. Other easy to spot signatures include repetitive use of keywords in meta tags and titles, excessive affilliate content (in the eyes of the SE's) .... Those are the easiest to quantify.

Cheers,
Paz.

And duplicate content, cloaked pages, link spam... there are so many spam techniques as factors the SEs include on their algorithms!

duplicate content:
a) If you have very similar pages on your site, in which only very few keywords change
b) If you have several domains or URLs that display the same website.

cloaking: It's when the SEs see and spider a different page (normally optimised for SEs) that the one the users are seeing. There're several ways to do it.

link spam:
a) internal: it means that you place too many links to different parts of the site. The navigation should be logical for the users. If Google understand it's not natural, your site will be considered spam
b) external: trying to inflate artificially the popularity of your site by getting inbound links in a not natural way.

Anyway, I think it's worth giving a read to what Google says about it:
