What's the use of link exchange..

I have another links question..

I read some articles about pr dropping a bit for every outgoing link you have on your site. It seems that if you link to another site you give some of your pr to that site! So my quetion about exchanging links is the following:
Does your PR benefit from a link exchange? I mean isn't it that you gain some from the link that points to you but you lose the same with your link back?

Or do you ALWAYS benefit from a link even when you have to give like 10 links back?

It depends on the PR of that particular page. i.e if the Pr of the page from which you give link to other site has PR6 and the PR of the page which links back to your site has PR7,then you are gainer and vice versa.

by getting incoming links, you're adding PR to the page of your choice..
depending on your site structure, you could get a net gain of PR to your target page.

and also increasing the keyword weighting, by using relevant anchor text

plus - if you're trading with related sites - you're helping visitors who might otherwise just leave your site.
they might be impressed by your links resource, and link to it from their own websites.

i always build links pages to try and rank for the theme of the links page (ie, outdoor events links) which our site is related to.
so, some visitors might visit your links page having found it through a search engine - and decide to stick around and check your site out (as its related to the links page...).

(having outgoing links to some quality sites and authority sites might be a good thing even if they are one way links - i dont know much about this though, but would appreciate any input at all on this side of things - such as, what sites are quality enough to link to)

im sorry i cant answer your question. but this is the closest i can get to a positive reason to link trade.

First, I enjoy linking to other sites that I think my website visitors would enjoy visiting. If I review their site and found it to be useful then I will share it.

Second, if they land on my homepages I like to keep them by offering them something that they will enjoy, learn from, and enjoy coming back to my sites.

Third, I try to swap links with sites that are like my site but not competing with my business. Example: I sell apples so I link with sites that have traffic from people who would like to buy apples from me.

Fourth, I review all sites I cross links with to make sure they offer someone information that can help them. I check to see what other sites they are cross linking with and their back links. I only swap links with family friendly sites. They are required to have a direct link on their home page leading to their link page.

Why swap links with a site if they hide their link page. After all, the World Wide Web should be shared by offering Internet users with some thing of value!

Fifth, I suggest having resource links OPEN TO A NEW WINDOW to avoid having your traffic leave your page. Example: Target = blank.

Last of all, many website owners are over zealous about worrying how they will be placed in search engine keyword placing.

If you are offering your visitor something of value, the major search engines will know it by indexing the importance of your keywords. Avoid over selling your site and you should do just fine. Example:

1. To many titles and subtitles
2. To many quotation marks (!)
3. To many question marks (?)
4. To many keywords (apples)
5. To many bold words (strong)
6. Hey this site is selling apples and making your buy them now!
