Jonk,

I'm curious as to why you say that divs are more accessible than tables? Being that tables are constructive using "relative" principles (this cell is next to that cell, and so forth) as opposed to absolute placement either through normalized or stated coordinates, I would still say that tables are more accessible.

I will concede that the "average" user that we'll see can view divs just fine, but I've experienced TONS of problems viewing divs on older machines. Dark Matter's comment about divs being screwed up in Google's cache also applies to users viewing your site through less capable browsers.

Hi bluesaga,

I always use divs, it is much faster and it is easier to read trough the XHTML code, but if you use divs it is a good idea to place all of your formating in a css. I would never use divs on a HTML page with the font tags. It would not be right.

I personally like divs a lot and use them in most of my pages, but beware of the many bugs present in Internet Explorer 6 (some might call this a less capable browser). It does not always render pages as you might expect (or as the CSS standards say it should) so you need to look at your pages with multiple browsers (a good idea anyway) if you decide to give up on tables.

Here's one article that talks about it:

Developers gripe about IE standards inaction

sorry to bring back an old post from the dead, but i would say it's worth learning to build sites using css and xhtml as it's where everything is heading. every year less people use outdated browsers, so it can only get better in that respect. i also think web standards will benefit seo a lot more in the future. why? cause pages that do validate and are accessible (508) tend to have "better" content. govt sites, welfare sites, news sites are all starting to ensure their content is accessible. as it gets harder to actually find decent results in most search engines, they will have to change drastically, and i can see them starting to validate each page as its indexed. who knows, maybe bobby validation will end up being the big "trick" of seo

Divs and Opera

Hi

If you are going to use divs then make sure you check the results with Opera. Opera has a hard time with divs and you could end up making the site a real eyesore for users.

I find divs are great for repositioning any troublesome table, javascript code or whatever. If for instance you can't get such to display where you want it to be displayed - even centrally - then wrap it in a div and then reposition the div. Nearly always works.

Nothing worse though to spend hours getting the page to display perfectly in Explorer and Firefox only to discover later that Opera just goes bonkers .
