Forums and their impact on Google

I've noticed more and more competitors are using forums (a la seoguy's). Aside from the benefits to our customers, I have a few questions regarding forums:

1 Do they have an impact either way on pr or serps? Seems like many sites who have them enjoy stronger results in both.

2 Most sites use vbulletin. Anyone know a reason?

3 If Iset one up, or have one set up for my site, are they fairly easy to maintain?

Thanks in advance
Mike

MikeB, 1. Forums help with SE's by increasing your page count with relevant content. 2. VBulliten is generally more user friendly, SE friendly and easier to skin than many other BB applivations. 3. There's not much to do once they're up and running other than to moderate the bad content and refine the categories.
