Most of my sites are at the top in Yahoo but my templates site jumped to 2 for "free website templates" and 13 for "website templates" in yahoo.co.uk. Hope this one will come out the sandbox soon.

hi Paz,
how long does it usually take between the time a page is indexed and the time it starts to rank for anything? our site is almost 3 months old. have quite a number of pages indexed but didn't get any traffic from yahoo.

Hi,
I know it sounds too general an answer, but it depends on the market the site is in.
My hotels site is in a semi-competitive market, and it's taken me 9 months (part-time) to really start ranking in yahoo.
I think full-time I could have it ranking in a few months, but in a really competitive market it would take a lot longer, I'm sure.
Cheers,
Paz.

hi Paz,
how do you measure competitiveness? do you base it on the number of results returned from yahoo? i did a search for the term i ultimately would want to rank for and yahoo returned about 14 million results.
btw, thank you very much for your insights.

Hi,
well to be honest, I've been in this business for so long now I have a feeling for what's competitive or not. I would guess 14 million results might be fairly competitive, but you have to consider the number of searches as well as the number of results.
But if you want a more quantitative analysis, then do a google search for "keyword difficulty tool". Seomoz was the best when I last used them, but I think you have to register now.
Cheers,
Paz.
