Question Adwords in the meantime?

Hi all,

I wanted to get the opinion of the knowlegeable and seasoned SEO specialists who frequent this forum. Now that I have you all buttered up, I hope you're willing to give me the advice I'm looking for.

I have my first client looking for SEO for the site I built for him last Summer. His site is seasonal as it deals with pool fence installation and sales in the Northeast. We're coming up on the season, and I'm afraid that the SEO effort might not show results in enough time to have an impact on traffic/sales early in the season. I've recommended we have a backup plan until we're being found high enough in related searches. That plan is using adwords on Google for a trial period if necessary.

Is that a good or bad approach? I'm working towards good optimization in the meantime, and plan to drop the pay-per-click once the site is being found on it's own.

Also, anyway to know when Google will crawl the site again? I've updated every page by adding text-based navigation to the bottom of every page, and a better description and keywords to the homepage a couple of days ago.

Thanks for your time,
ScottW

If a couple of days ago is like the week-end or before then you might be lucky.
Just had a deepcrawl beginning of the week.
I don't use pay per click but it might be a good plan if there is some budget and you think you might not make it on time.

A couple of days ago would literally be Tuesday night. Darn, I probably missed it.

Is there any way to find out when the deep crawls or any crawl is happening ahead of time so I can plan accordingly in the future?

We use PPC and it is very effective as some customers like to trust adwords rather than use the search engine results. HOWEVER you MUST track your ppc sales, Or else you will not know where your sales are generated from (SERPS or Adwords).

You also need to ensure you know which words generate the sales.
For example.

An advert for Kylie Minogue Knickers not only attracts the women who like the product, also attracts all the blokes looking to see kylies bum. (and why not)

So the keyword "kylie knickers" might bring you in 1000 clicks per week and may be 1 sale, whilst a keyword: discount knickers might bring you in 100clicks and 10 sales. Not knowing which keyword is working will ensure you fail.

So you need to ensure you know which word brings in the business.!!!

Hope that helps

Nick,

Thanks for the info. Luckily pool fences and pool safety won't be drawing the same crowd as Kylie Minogue.

Are you tracking that information by by putting it in the URL from the ad? Sorry if that's a low level question, but that's how I think I'd do it, and want to make sure it's the way it's done by experienced people as well.

Do you use Overture as well as Google Adwords? If so, do you know which you tend to get more leads from?

Scott

We use espotting/overture and google

We get more clicks from Google, however depends on your market I think.
I use a tracking code for my ads using SQL and ASP

&camefrom=google is a popular way to track links from your ads
