I can imagine that some sites will do better via SMO than SEO. People don't use www.google.com to look for new online friends, funny stories/videos they go straight to their favourite blogs, portals, forums, myspace etc... sites.

SMO won't work for some sites/markets though.

I agree with Paz, most people do not use search engines for social networking sites. This can be an effective tool for creating traffic/visitors to your site. If you can do it in a non-promotional way and keep it interesting and updated its possible. It is a good way to get out and be "known".

What I would do is start my own personal facebook account, and start uploading pictures of you with all sorts of different sunglasses. Sooner or later, someone is going to ask you "Hey were did you get those glasses?" and you can pass them your link Not to mention, if you own and run a site you can add it to your personal profile because it IS relevant personal information about yourself (which ironically they do ask for).
