Anyone know why the yahoo search engine is so poor, or anyone got any idea how it ranks websites?

When using the yahoo.co.uk search, I search for the keywords 'dogs for sale' and it comes back with the number 1 result being a canine food company with a simple page that sells dogs for sale. Whilst it may be selling dogs for sale on that page, that is not the websites main purpose and the website is not very popular anyway. There are hundreds of dedicated pet websites whose main purpose is selling dogs and who have opitmised their site for that and got thousands of relevant backlinks.

I'm not sure if this is the case with other keywords in yahoo, but I would have thought that they should spend more time in improving their search results.

Anyone got any comments??? I think they are years behind google.

though its still up to Yahoo which site that they want rank first... but thats the purpose of seo maybe the site have a proper optimization... and they deserve to rank for first for their effort..

I don't spend a lot of time looking at yahoo serps these days, but they're a long way behind Google in terms of relevance. That's due to a lack of resources for sure.

Yahoo still prefers higher keyword densities, high numbers of incoming links regardless of quality or relevance, and you can rank particulary well in Yahoo if you can get a high PR (PR7 and above) link.

I shouldnt really bother about yahoo results when i rank well in google but they really are very poor.

If you search in yahoo for 'dogs' and select UK only, the website that is number 1 has only one backlink and is a very poor site. I dont think yahoo uses backlinks that much to determine its serps, I think it mainly factors the keyword in the domain and onpage seo.

Yahoo has always been easier than google for me. I have been #1 for years. G movers around from 2 to 200. I would start with the basics.

On screen SEO
Change the page title. Start the home page title with your most important keyword phrase. Mine is cheap sunglasses. I also include a visible link as close to the top of the page as I can. Take a look at my site as an example.

Off Screen

Get links. Y is not picky. Any link is a good link. I have 1700+ backlinks on Y and 11 on G

If you have submitted your site on high PR links then you find your site in yahoo SERPs.

You can't predict results in Yahoo so easily if your content and meta tags are not provided with your targeted keywords and also having with the less age of domain if you are pitching for highly searchable keywords.

It wants more efforts and more time for Yahoo. Even, It seems like Google is much more easy than Yahoo.
