Need help on building a Ringtone site
Hi,
I've been thinking of starting a ringtones website but I can't decide what keyworks I should be targetting. I was thinking maybe make a website to target Nokia phones because 'nokia ringtones' or 'free nokia ringtones' are really popular search terms. But i'm still really unsure. I've signed up to mediaplazza affiliate program who provide the content. Any help would be much appreciated.

I would start looking at your competition then play around with wordtracker and some search term suggestion tools...
example
Code:
ringtones, free ringtones, composer, nokia, samsung, polyphonic, keypress, composer ringtones, downloadable ringtones
Also, I'd target the same ones as above but instead of 'ringtones' target 'ring tones' as well

Thanks for your input so far.
Would it be worthwhile building a big site, targetting particular ringtone searches? I've noticed some sites that always seem to show up if you search for a particular artist ringtone. But i've also heard Google can sometimes rate it as being spam. Those big sites seem to do really well though. I would also need a lot of links back to my site. Are there any easy ways of doing this? Would it be more wise to just make a few static pages, and target certain keyworks, like the ones you suggested?

Unless you want to try to battle the big dogs right up front, you could always start with a lesser set of keywords and build from there, there's nothing wrong with starting small and working up. For example:
downloadable ringtones - 294,000 results (Google)
Overture: 176.3 /day
Wordtracker: 186.0 /day
free downloadable ringtones - 223,000 results (Google)
Overture: 166.4 /day
Wordtracker: 180.0 /day
With some good on-page optimization, and some nice backlinks, those less than 300,000 result keywords should be fairly easy to compete with. Get backlinks with the anchor text of 'Free Downloadable Ringtones', 'Downloadable Ringtones', or both.
I wouldn't try to cram everything on the front page, I would limit the front page to those keywords, with a minor mention of other stuff here and there (nokia, motorola, etc).
Title: Free Downloadable Ringtones
H1: Free Downloadble Ringtones
H2: Check out our selection of Free Downloadable Ringtones (or something to that effect)
Some paragraphs with the keywords mentioned, randomly, but carefully, mentioning Nokia, Motorola, whatever you want to target.
From there, target specific stuff on other pages.
Menu:
Nokia Ringtones
Motorola Ringtones
Nokia page:
Title: Free Downloadable Nokia Ringtones
H1: Free Downloadable Nokia Ringtones
H2: Check out our selection of Free Downloadable Nokia Ringtones (or something similiar).
Paragraphs targeting Nokia, but still casually mentioning your main keywords.
Same as above with the Motorola Ringtones page.
You're targeting your keywords, but at the same time you're also building some branding for "free ringtones, "free nokia ringtones" and "free motorola ringtones" even though you're not targeting that straight out.
These are just my suggestions, but I think this particular example could be done easily. And then when you get that rolling, you could try targeting some more popular and major searches since you have a good base built here.

Thanks mobilebadboy, very helpful reply.
What's the easiest way of getting backlinks? I've read posts on this forum that talk about having hundreds of backlinks to compete.

find all the backlink of your competitors in yahoo by typing this in the search field "linkdomain:www.competitorurl.com" or google "link:http://www.competitorurl.com"
Then send out an e-mail request to exchange links to each site you come across. There are numerous way of getting links. Just avoid Free For All Pages (Make sure your link is on a cell phone related site)

That's the beauty. Search for downloadable ringtones. The first results has 146 backlinks showing, most of those are internal. The 2nd result has 10. The 3rd has none, and it's just a spammy site with no PR. Now granted, the main root sites have (or may have) more backlinks, but you're only competing with those particular pages of the sites.
Build a well designed site with something to offer, and you could submit it to the many free directories out there. That will start building some BLs while you work on your links from other sites. And target any site for a link exchange, cell phones, ringtones, wallpapers, cell phone games, etc. It's all relevant.
