Link building is tough - it's a lot of work. I generally spend 2 hours per page and I try to get 20 incoming links for each (usually end up with around 10).
However, it does add up over time. Over the past few days, I've generated about 25 incoming links. That should count for something. I'm also in the process of submitting to the big directories, which definitely gives a nice boost.

Well first of all I dont charge per keyword so a direct comparison is not really valid here, there is no such thing as 10 keywords etc, I charge on a monthly basis and based on what the client asks of my as far as expectations per month I charge anywhere from $2000 on the low end to $20,000 on the high end, and thats per month.
However I also don't typically charge clients for 6 months unless they are a huge site and every new month there are more and more keywords to go for.
Take my pharmacy client for instance they have over 2000 drugs and each one is as competitive as the next and they are adding to this all the tiem, we do 50 pages per month so really that account being "done" won't happen.
Typically though we are I would say average $3000-$4000 per month for the first 2-4 months and we charge the same as this company for maintanence $500 per month for just links or more if we are still constantly doing onpage SEO, adding keywords, writing content etc. The $500 per month is for reciprocal link building with one of our team, Ryan, Jason, Gerry, but not all clients need that so often we just part ways and their rankings stay up there with the SEO we have done, and the links we got for them already, and then if a site drops say 6 months down the road we just evaluate what needs to be done, and do it to get back up an charge accordingly
My other model is hourly, people can get consulting with me for $250 per hour with a 5 hour per month minimum.
So anyways, if you were wondering what I charge, there it is AND ITS A LOT
But when it comes down to it, if you are making $10,000 profit off the web per month now, and I increase that to $50,000 spending even 10 or 20 of that is still a really easy justification no?

OK so your average client spends around $3000 to $5000 per month for what? Complete SEO or just On-Page and then add $500+ a month for Link Building? I don't under stand your pricing clearly. BTW the way you explain your service pricing on your site gets me confused. Not sure if I am stupid or it's not clearly explained. With SEO Inc. I understand what I get for the pricing but SEO Guy's pricing is just writen strange I think.

Option trader: It seems that you are getting your 6k of value by just taking action. Even if you don't get the money back you have learned what it takes to get it done yourself. Which is very worthwhile.

I'm curious why you're spending so much time working on your site Optiontrader when you're dropping thousands to have someone else do that for you.
Are you going to cancel your contract?
Why kind of options did they give you for refunds or cancellations?
If you're not cancelling then give them a call and get them off their butts.

I did and received a personal call from the CEO, who pulled the entire team in. They've gone ahead and submitted the rest of the HTML changes they want me to make. He's also gotten the copywriters started, so I'm definitely beginning to see progress.
As for why I'm working on it, it's because the SEO company is only working on 10 keywords. I'm trying my hand at optimizing my own pages for various keywords to see how well I can do.
Incidentally, FWIW I ran a mathematical model on a number of keywords yesterday to start testing some of the basic SEO rules (I don't like to take advice at random). I found that keyword occurrences within a page accounted for about 50% of Google ranking. Obviously, there are a lot of other factors at play - but I didn't test for those (yet). Just thought it was interesting.

hmm that is interesting. I have never really done any tests like that myself. You seem to be really getting into the seo stuff, i'm impressed
It would be great if the pages you have optimized show up higher than theirs

Success!
My first attempt at SEO worked fantastically - my first page jumped from position 39 to position 7 on Google in 3 days.
I checked my AdWords account and I'm seeing about 400 searches a day for this keyword (I have a huge budget and my ads are appearing on nearly every search results page for my keywords, so that's probably all the traffic there is for this phrase). The keyword is a well known competing product.
Sweet!
