Did G do something yesterday?

So I am working for a client, and the kw they have targeted is "Prescott Arizona Homes". They have yet to break into the top-100 in G's SERP's.

Yesterday, about 4pm pacific time, I checked on their kw, and they were ranking #2. I was happy. However, this lasted for about 20 minutes, and then the site reverted page to the usually ranking of about #150 or so.

I figured G was doing an update, and I was pretty sure I was just getting different info from different data centers.

Long story short, I cannot duplicate the #2 results I had for about 20 minute yesterday. I know I didn't mis-type the kw when I searched - I did it like five times.

Did anyone else see anything "different" from Google, or do i need to lay off the peyote? Was there some sort of update? I checked kw's for other clients, can't find any differences.

Thanks.

This been going on for a while... you just didn't get hit on a keyword you follow. I have 1000s of keyphrases I follow on many sites and this motion has become more obvious since the beginning of the month.

I watch the UK serps and I've been seeing this for a few months now. It's gotten so bad that I'm less inclined to look at ranking reports but rather look even more closely than previously at;
Google Analytics > Traffic Sources > Search Engines > Non Paid > Keywords
traffic on a day to day basis to get an idea if I'm really ranking or not. I don't think these top rankings are real, but rather personalisation - but the personalisation is happening in a way that I don't understand.

Humm... it's a bit like before... stuff that goes deep comes back better... and vise versa... but the rate and time it takes is different from months ago... thus lots of people noticing now.

There is no real pattern I could make to what gets a listing wacked or not... besides it was it's time. Tastes like a scrutiny process that takes the page out of the way while it verifies stuff... then it's released, usually in a better position, or is left deeper than before.

Like if instead of doing a Florida update, they fractionated it so it goes smoother... but I used color codes to track this new process and so far, basically all listing got the wack at one point or an other since the last few months.

I think that sort of dancing happens with every new website.
Once the SERPS are stabilized, you will find good traffic.

When you are opening your clients website so frequently; google gives preference to your web history, this can be a reason too

Web History helps deliver more personalized search results based on the things you've searched for on Google and the sites you've visited. You might not notice a big impact on your search results early on, but they should steadily improve over time the more you use Web History

That's a good thought. How can I prevent this from happening...clearing out my cookies often?

I'd use a proxy and/or remove the personalisation with this search;

http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=all#...fdf54983a0c902d

It's the webhp?hl=a part of the search that removes (for me) the localisation and history.

Cheers,
Paz.

I'm such a stooge.

It happened to me again yesterday. Client ranks #1 for keyword (we've been in the 60's). Before I got too excited, I realized that I was signed in to my Google account. I had just read my email, and was still signed in as "me". I clicked the signout button at the top right of page, and G automatically re-does the search. Client went back where I expected them to be.

So yeah - Google was remembering the few times I did click on clients link after pulling them up on G's SERPs. Them ran them to the top for some of the future searches I did.

Odd, this didn't/doesn't happen often...only the second time in 8 months or so. Wonder why it doesn't work most of the time I am signed into G. My primary email addy is google - I'm always signed in. I question the question is - If Google is suppose to remember my links, and put them up to the top, why doesn't it work all the time?

Thought I would post my notes here. Thanks for the help

We have had the same experience for the last 9 months. You might want to try using a proxy...
