Time depends on your site and if there is an active editor in your category.

IF you can't beat them..... Join them! Dmoz is always looking for quality editors.

Patience and persistence is what it takes.

DMOZ is too big for its own boots and trying to get a site submitted is hard work.

If the category you want to get listed in has an editor (look at the bottom of the category) you can send them a message. You will probably get a reply telling you they are volunteers and are very busy e.t.c. but it can sometimes help. It worked for me once.

I have read on other forums that becoming an editor is not as easy as you would expect. They seem to have a very strict criteria even though they struggle to deal with the work load.

Good luck.

As a DMOZ editor I can tell you I submitted an application 6 times before I became an editor. Your application has to be very good for you to even be considered. Make sure that you have no typo's and that your submitted sites are both relavant to the cat you are applying for and a good representation of the category. Also, if you have a site affiliated with the category you are applying for and that site makes money....good luck with that. DMOZ creates a large influx of backlinks to your site because of the number of clones online. Think of it like this, if you were an editor of a directory that would make or break a site would you let me as a person who sells widgets edit the widget category? Not only could I add my own sites, but, I could make sure my competition didn't ever show up. One last thing about applying is make sure you apply for a very low level category and work your way up. Applying for Shopping->Widgets on your first go will not only get you declined but probably laughed at it would make more sense to apply for Shopping->Widgets->Regional->North America->United States->Kansas and work up to it slowly. Becoming an editor is not a matter of them versus you, it's a matter of those applying using a bit of common sense and looking at it from the point of view of those in control of the directory.

To sum up:

Use common sense!

My category is edited by my main competitor!! I contacted DMOZ about this when I first noticed and they did not reply. As a commercial category I was very concerned about the conflict of interest this created. Fortunately we have a good relationship with this competitor and he has not blocked any changes to our listings but it is a dangerous policy and not one I agree with.

Thats exactly what I mean. It reminds me of the old cartoon of the fish swimming in a plugged in blender. I would just be waiting for the proverbial hammer to fall.

Unique content. Unfortunately, it seems that your site may not qualify for a listing. Submit it and forget about it. If it happens to get past an editor then count your blessings.

I'd look for other promotional opportunities - there are a number of other directories that'll gladly accept your submission and list your site, both free and paid.

Bottom line - a dmoz listing is not necessary. Don't be fooled into thinking otherwise.

I 'm not interested in becoming an editor at this time; just want to get listed with DMOZ; I know wedding gifts are competitive, and therefore knew that it would be tough to get my site listed, and also know that it would help our site tremendously if we got listed with DMOZ. PaleSpyder, thank you for your insite on this and recommendations. As an editor, can you reommend to me how I can better my chances of getting www.blueveil.com listed in DMOZ ? Thank you.

Really you just have to submit it and forget it...

There's really not much control, except to make sure you follow the rules when submitting and don't submit more than once

Lightbulb blueveil - choose your neighbourhood

Blueveil:

choose a city, town, community close to where you live. I found out too late.
go into ODP and see if your local chamber of commerce or bus route is listed,
local banks, parks and rec, etc.

They don't care about the category you want, they want someone to editor their site. the best advise given to me was actually here, go through this thread, backwords, you'll see dmoz for dummies . org . Read it . good advise.

Whatever you do: DON"T MAKE ANY POLITICALLY DRIVEN STATEMENTS !!!
("DMOZ Editor wannabe" HERE)

Don't forget, They now have over 66,000 editors, it's pretty hard to pick a topic that an already existing editor doesn't have. If you really want to become an editor go see joeant, the info is also on this thread. I registered right away and now have "travel" as my category. They are not as big as "DMOZ" yet, but when they are, you'll be back hear asking how to get on joeant. Thats all the advise I have, If its right or not, I guess I'll soon find out with the next "POST REPLY"
