That sounds like a 302 redirect not a 301 redirect.

I'm not sure i understand your point, 302 is a temporary redirect, 301 a permanent. And by the way a 302 redirect is not the way to go in my opinion.
When you move a url it should be permanent or be prepared to face eventual penalties from SE.

Only those sites would know. With that said, redirecting the Non-WWW to the WWW isn't a requirement. It's more like an insurance policy.
