linking from file names with link.htm, link.php

What is the deal with links coming from pages with link.htm, links.htm, link.php, links.php, links.asp, etc. ?

I have read posts that they don't count in backlinks. I have many links coming in from other sites with those file names, and link anchor to those file names being links.

Yeah I gotta rename one of my pages to, apparently they dont show up in your backlinks so if a site puts you on their links.html page it dont count. so the best thing to do is just kindly ask them to change it. I thinks links-123.html is fine tho...

I have a new page setup for links now because mine was links.aspx but now it's resources.aspx. I find resources sounds better in terms of link naming or overall attractive vs. links.aspx.

Jocelyn had a good response to the same about a week ago, but I just can't find it (as far as how he dealt with his own links.xxx). If I'm not mistaken he did a 301 to the new links pages and it took two updates for them to regain their original PR which now counts for his partners.

I just set up some link pages last nite and named them refer.htm because of Joc's post. I figure it can hurt, I'm sure Google is aware and taking or going to take action to penalize the millions of linking only sites out there.

I also like to place links through out my site that is nothing more than a dot. Like a may use a period and turn it into a link. I use it on the front pages to link to the refer.htm page

I don't know how good this is but I have 4 sites that I have the link pages on. If someone would like to trade links, let me know.

Here's a look at one http://www.moonlightmile.net/refer.htm

What am I missing here? Links derive much, some say most, of their benefit from the anchor text.

You may also wish to think about theming your links pages (maybe they are, I just looked at the one). The prevailing thought is that it will provide a greater benefit to your partners and thereby, hopefully, make it easier to get partners. Have you been here?

Now that you mention the anchor text I remeber reading that too. I am taking so much it right now it's mind boggling. However I did read that making a period on a page a link, helps as the spiders only see it as a link and records it as such. Is that wrong?

I should theme my link page? It was just some quicky I did last night to get something up. When you say "theme" you mean it should matct the rest of the site I assume.

Also I can't view the link you provided me. Tell me I don't have permission.

Question URL Permission

Your right about the permissions problem. I think the problem is with the forum settings and not SEO Guy's fault.

I've never seen or heard anything about a period being helpful. The only purpose I could see would be to hide the link from the viewer.

Theming link pages would be to have a page for each relevant topic as related to your site. EX. A travel related site would be relevant to Airlines, Travel Agents, Rental Cars, Hotels.... and not related to SEO, pool filters, Auto Parts.

That link is for SEO-Guy's link exchange section. I believe you may have to apply and accept the appropriate conditions.
