How to make search engines love a site?
Hi
I'm doing a web site (my first! wish me luck!) and I need it to be seen by people who search in Yahoo and msn etc. (I was going to say Google too, but I've been reading the google stuff here and it seems that google is finished).
A friend gave me some php scripts - I'll need to do my web site in php, apparently. These scripts can be used to make search engines think my site really is the best in my business.
Apparently, it's all to do with their crawlers - they look at a site and then they put it in the results. These scripts let them see lots and lots of relevant text - text that won't be necessary for the site's visitors. The visitors will see a different page!
Is this a good thing? I can see that, logically, it will do what I want, but I don't see why I should have to do this - it makes it very complicated!
Why can't a search engine just see my site like a customer would? Do I really need to do this?
I think my customers will like what I'm going to give them, so why wouldn't the search engines like it too?
Do you all use these scripts?
I really don't want to add extra work to this project!!! And making two versions sounds like extra work to me!
Please advise me on how to use these scripts so that I don't need to work too hard but that the search engines will still put my web pages where customers can see it.
Thanks
MCS

minicoopers:
The scripts you describe are used for cloaking. This means that you will show search engines one page and your surfers a whole different page (you can run a search for "cloaking" for more information).
Unfortunately, search engines frawn upon seeing such practices as it is used to manupulate their results in an unwanted way. They therefore ban sites that get caught doing this. Like in every industry, there will always be the people that use these scripts and not get caught, these are mostly people who are more advanced than yourself.
If I were you I'd stay away fom such practices and start learning and practicing the basics of web design, programming and seo. Once you have more understanding of what you are getting yourself into you'll be able to make some better decisions.
Thats just my 2 cents, good luck.

hehe php best for a web site? i've got a ton of page one sites that use old .shtml as index pages haha
I love it when people look at my lousy counter on front doors and laugh, that link sends a ton of people to my corp sites
problem is it's an old .shtml script
anyway, we only use php in some forums, but there are so many hacks out that we're thinking of taking all php down due to all the exploits
good meta, high percent of keywords in content, some keyword links, some bold and some decent links in and the search engines love you, IMHO

Hi
SO these scripts are no good? I thought they'd make my site attractive to people like Mr. Google ...
I know someone who uses them and he's doing fine (seems to make afortune with it!)
But I'm just planning on doing a web site and making cash. He has lots of web sites and, from what I can (can't) understand, it's very complicated.
Anyway, I've bought a book on php - it's like programming! I'll never get this working...
It's a sad old world.
I need to get on this guys good side, get some private tuition.
Thanks

He might be doing well now, but if he is cloaking, he will be discovered...eventually. He will then have the hard work of trying to get all his customers/projects back to the status they are used to. Not easy when you have just been banned from the worlds BIGGEST search engine. MiniC, if you learn anything from this site, it should be to use good SEO techniques. Fooling a SE spider only works short term, Google's algorythm is organic too... it evolves. Oh, don't discount Google yet..Bill Gates has not gone bust yet either!!!

minicoopers
minicoopers it seems like you are very very new to this. That is ok, do not worry. We are here to help.
BUT I would not worry about SEO even a little bit, until you learn the following languages at least an intermediate level in this order:
HTML - you need to write good code or if you use an editor than you need to clean it up afterwords.
CSS - This is important for design and clean code.
PHP or some other sever side language.
A littlebit of Javascript.
Than the following softwares:
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe GoLIve or Macromedia Dreamweaver or some other editor
Maybe even some Flash
Than you could start looking at SEO. Even if you could place your site high in the search engines, what good is it if noones wants to look at it?
Plus most of the SEO techniques are related the way you program, design, run a website. It is not some magic bottom you turn on.
It seems like you are talking about Cloaking, which is in my opinion a master technique. Like others say it is easy to get caught and once you are banned you are done. For cloaking you need an updated database on all the se crawlers. I have seen companies charge a min $1000 for that.
If you hear SEO techniques that are being used it will never make sense to you unless you master those above things I wrote.
Everyone agrees?
So go on and practice until you blue in the face. And drink some caffeine and practice more....haha
Good luck, write if you have questions.
