keyword selection

I have my site index by all three major search engines finaly. Now the problem I am having is getting them ranked for the terms I want. On my www.CollegeBasketballWinners(DOT)net site I am ranked for only 2 keyword phrases that I want to be for the entire site. And on my www.FreeCollegeBasketballPicks(DOT)net Its not ranked for ANY keyword phrases. I am lost and don't know what to do? Any suggestions?

Well if you are happy to finally be indexed then your site must be fairly new. New sites will usually not rank for competitive keyphrases for months, so don't waste too much time looking there, just busting time. Go for easier keys until these are yours, then go for some more challenging phrases. If you go after unacheaveable goals, like being #1 for cars with a new site, then you'll lose your time and sanity... even after years, there are some keys I'm not even looking at...

That just seems unreal to me. How can you not try to target the top keywords. Isnt that the entire point? Just make your site better than the guy in number 1. I can understand how it might take a year or two but how can you never even attempt to look at the top keywords. If that is the case I might as well drop all my sites now because the amount of dropoff in traffic from the top 3 keywords for each sport to the 4th-the rest of them is phenominal. Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Now you are pulling words out of my mouth... I never said not to go for them... I said to aim at acheveable goals... until your site has been around a while.

The problem is bots do not think and have no eyes to see your site is better than theirs... if they have 20 times your links they will still kick your butt... Just take poker for fun... you'll be fighting against casinos... they have much more $ and resources than you... that is what I'm talking about.. you are not the only one going for the good keys, we are all after them.

If you can't get to the #1, doesn't mean you should drop the ball... you don't have to be #1 to make $...
